This short video uses absurd humour to illustrate the inconsistencies in some people’s reactions or questions when they hear stories of sexual violence. This kind of language perfectly illustrates elements of rape culture and the double standard between crimes of a sexual nature and other crimes.
As the video unfolds the story of James’ murder, it is continually challenged in absurd ways. While it seems inconceivable that a victim of homicide should bear the blame for their own murder, it is all too common for those who have experienced sexual violence to be the ones who are blamed for it. Here, the use of the second degree enables us to initiate a conversation about our ways of reacting when someone discloses sexual violence.
The video is available in English but you can activate French subtitles in the settings.
